Rumoured couple Felicia Chin and Zhang Yao Dong speaks up

For a whole two years, the rumour mill has meticulously spun claims of links between local actors Felicia Chin and Zhang Yao Dong. The speculation is that Felicia was won over by Yao Dong's caring ways.

The photogenic pair made their couple debut in the 2007/2008 Ch 8 mega-drama series, Love Blossoms, and since won over the likes of viewers at home.

The duo however has been adamant with a resolute "we're only just friends" stand. But as garnered wisdom or just a whole load of skepticism will tell you, while a boy and a girl can be friends, there is no such thing as just friends.

For the first time, the pair agreed to an interview together during filming for the ongoing Ch 8 cooking variety programme, Three Plus One. On set, the pair displayed not just their culinary skills but a tacit understanding of one another.

Yao Dong could not stop praising his female compatriot to the skies. "She even sent me a text message and told me that she knows what she would like to cook [for this show]. She said that she had two dishes!

"Her strong points are the many changes she made since she first joined showbiz. Despite going through many trials, her sincerity has not changed. She is very sincere towards people and is very serious about her career. Felicia has a heart of gold."

He then turned around to face Felicia and encouragingly said, "This is really good. Keep it up!" His random outburst was met with an abashed look from the lady herself.

The menu, he added, was "wholly decided by Felicia" and he complimented it as being "inventive" with "many different creative ideas." Apparently, Felicia specially sought help and cooking tips from her maternal grandmother in order to prep for the show.

"When we first collaborated together, the impression she gave me was like a deer caught in the headlights. After one year of trials and tribulations, she has become more matured. She might have been training herself in secret," he continued.

The jovial showers of praise ended hastily, though, once their alleged romance was put to question. "The both of us seldom meet up," he clarified. "The relationship between the both of us can only be described to be 'jun zi zhi jiao dan ru shui' (meaning a normal friendship in Chinese)."

Felicia, on the other hand, was far more coy with her answers. She declined to comment on Yao Dong's positive traits and instead, directed the questions back to viewers, "That is for you guys to slowly understand [him] and discover."

However, she was quick to throw in a failsafe compliment of Yao Dong saying "At least his culinary skills are pretty good!"

Catch Felicia Chin and Zhang Yao Dong on Ch 8's Three Plus One and watch them cook up a storm on May 12 at 8pm!

Felicia Chin gets married - for a new role

She's already played a mummy in Channel 8 drama Baby Bonus, so portraying a bride-to-be must have be a cinch for Felicia Chin.

Filming the local telemovie Seven Days, the actress looked every bit the ravishing bride on her 'wedding dinner'. The movie, which will debut on Channel 5 this Saturday, revolves around a 30-something couple who are planning to exchange their "I dos".

Now that she's tackling more roles dealing with marriage and motherhood, one wonders if Felicia, who will turn 26 in October, thinks it's too early to chime along to her ticking biological clock. Or maybe she's already warming up to her maternal instincts.

Well, the answer's no.

"Frankly speaking, I think it's still a very faraway thing for myself. Probably because I haven't found Mr. Right yet. Yes, I get older every year, but it hasn't really hit me yet. Sometimes you still think you are 21 (guffaws). It's good to always have a young heart, and look younger than your age as well, haha!"

Don't assume that this lass does not take the subject matter seriously. In fact, "marriage is something pretty sacred to me. I hope it's something that lasts rather than some part-time commitment."

Naturally no one hopes to get cold feet just before their big day, but the pragmatic one says "it's better to face it now rather than five years down when you're already married and you wonder whether he's the right person for you. Sometimes you must really trust your intuition."

Her dream wedding, she said, would be white, and a very private affair. However, the filial daughter added that she would probably "still go with a very traditional wedding because I think ultimately it's for my mother (her father passed away when she was in Junior College) and I think it'll be one night where she'll be pretty proud.

"Sometimes wedding banquets are for your parents."

She has plenty of time to stress over planning the dinner. After all, she's not set any by-when date set in stone when she plans to give up singlehood. A few years ago, however, "it was okay, by 27, 28, find yourself a boyfriend," she admitted.

Known for her cheerful, bubbly persona, budding suitors will be glad to know that Felicia is (a) currently single, and (b) not going to turn into a Bridezilla monster.

"I think it would be good to having a wedding planner or at least friends you can leave things to, like help you carry your dress (laughs), so you don't have to worry about everything. The bride just sits there, relax and enjoy."

But it's her next remark that truly takes the (wedding) cake.

While her onscreen boyfriend proposes to her in the "traditional way a la the HDB flat", Felicia proves to be even more laidback than that.

"Just as long we're in love and it's the right time, the right moment, I'll say yes, even if it's over a plate of char kway teow.

"But it'll be nice if he goes down on bended knee!"

Seven Days airs Mar 27, 10pm on Channel 5.

Felicia Chin @ NuYou Magazine March 2010

Lost in Transition

David Gan's Blog : 东方升起

Felicia looks fabulous in this lavender dress from Gucci’s 2010 spring summer collection. There’s so much energy in this cover you can almost feel it bursting out of the page. Don’t you think if I posted this photo without the mass head you wouldn’t have been able to tell that it’s from a local Chinese magazine? It looks so much better than most of the English titles you find on the stands today. But seriously, you can’t expect much from a team of pretentious SPGs who spends more time pretending than actually working on the magazine right!?

You can be pretentious when you know you have the goods to back it up. But if you don’t, please don’t even try because it’ll just make you look pathetic! Whenever I go for events, there will always be a group of people trying to talk and act like AMs, when they are actually all born and bred in Singapore? You can be an Asian living abroad learning the white people culture but never forget where you’re from because no matter how much you want to be an AM, you’ll always be a Ching Chong inside. Come on people! China is such a big market now; even the AMs want to learn Chinese. Why are we still putting blondies on the cover instead of luscious black locks? Staying true to our roots is the only way we can truly compete internationally with the rest of the world! Good job Nuyou!
