Felicia Chin returns to headline new Ch8 drama

Taking time off from showbiz to hit the books has proved to be a good break for Felicia Chin who returns to local TV looking more cheery and upbeat than ever.

She promised to be back when she bade goodbye in July last year. True to word, Felicia Chin is jumping at almost every opportunity presented to her to meet with local TV viewers -- that is if her schedule permits.

Looking fresh and young with her stylish short crop at the imaging session for Love Thy Neighbour, the Felicia standing before us today reminded us of a 20-year-old budding showbiz newbie rather than a 27-year-old actress with seven years of experience in the industry.

Even the director and drama's executive producer Winnie Hong echoed our sentiments and remarked on Felicia's "different look in her eyes" and the "innocent vibes" emitted by the latter.

Perhaps her return to school has simplified the life of the former full-time actress and allowed her to catch up on a chapter of schooling life she never got to fully savour.

She thoughtfully commented, "Being away from the industry for one year, I think my thoughts have maybe changed a little, like what the director and the rest are saying 'I see something different in your eyes'."

In Love Thy Neighbour, Felicia will be starring as the spunky Wang Tian Hu alongside veteran actor, Ha Yu, as they play a pair of father and daughter who goes round conning others. The drama also stars Shaun Chen, Aileen Tan, Huang Wenyong and Vivian Lai.

At the interview with xinmsn yesterday, Felicia spoke with a raspy voice, still recovering from a bout of flu. The bubbly one shared that she had just returned from a two-week overseas summer programme with Peking University.

When asked about the most memorable incident that happened to her in China, she gleefully chuckled, "Oh, they all thought that I was below 20 years old!"

There was also a Chinese guy who baffled Felicia with his words when he "decided to call me his 'mei' (younger sister in Chinese) cos he said I looked like his younger sister -- and he's 19 years old."

While Felicia's overseas classmates weren't aware of her star-studded past, which allowed her to "thoroughly enjoy the process of making friends", she did not know how they got wind of her acting days during her second week in Peking University.

So were there any requests for autographs and pictures?

"They were like ehh 'Come on superstar, give me an autograph'. But that's about all lah," Felicia recalled.

"They were quite nice 'cos I was saying I don't want people to have the pre-notion of who I am, I just want to make friends and they said 'Oh it's cool. You should be proud of what you do'," she shared.

Looking more svelte than ever, the former Star Search 2003 winner seemed to have lost quite a bit of weight since we last saw her and jokingly attributed it to possible factors such as her "hair cut" and even "the stairs in NUS" where she is pursuing a degree in Business.

With more time on her hands now that she's no longer a full-time artiste, has she met her Mr. Right on campus?

"Given more time in Beijing, maybe something might happen," the cheeky lass quipped in jest.

On a more serious note, she explained, "I mean, I can talk to the guys in school. But it's more like a mentor kind of [relationship] because there's a little age difference and sometimes I share with them my work experience. So it's more of a sharing session than a romantic conversation."

Currently on a "very packed" three-month long vacation, she will be spending her holidays filming the upcoming Ch8 drama series, Love Thy Neighbour and the info-ed programme, Stars for a Cause in an elephant conservatory in Thailand.
