Felicia Chin gets to showcase her singing talent in The Glittering Days.

PORTRAYING a young singer torn between two lovers in The Glittering Days, Singaporean actress Felicia Chin discovered how singing effectively complements acting.

The revelation came during a scene in which Chin’s character sings her heart out to Su Qing Yun (William San), who is hesitant to pursue their relationship further due to the presence of her other suitor, Huang Da Wei (Jeffrey Cheng).

“It was a very empowering moment. I think I’ve evolved not only in terms of acting. Singing also helps with expressing raw emotions. I really learnt a lot while filming this series. It’s not just about acting but living life. That is why I remember that moment until now,” offered Chin, 25, during an interview to promote her latest drama.

Rising star: Singapore’s Felicia Chin plays getai singer Xu Wen Hui in new ntv7 series The Glittering Days
The pretty actress was glad that her role as a club singer-turned-street performer sees her taking to the stage to showcase her artistic talents during the filming of the series late last year.

“Though I’ve not cut an album before, I’ve had the opportunity to sing theme songs and I’ve performed in charity shows and outdoor events. I’ve loved singing since I was a child. It is a very strong passion of mine,” said Chin, who is open to the idea of pursuing a singing career.

Chin plays Xu Wen Hui, a charismatic young singer in the 30-episode Mandarin drama series.

Compelled to take part in various singing competitions by her adoptive father Cai Jin Long, she grows up to become a withdrawn and temperamental young woman. Yet, with her considerable talents, she quickly gains fame in Malaysia and Taiwan.

However, a scandal involving her dating a married man leaves her reputation in tatters and puts her career in jeopardy. Her recording contract is terminated. Her boyfriend leaves her. She even runs into debt.

Worse, she discovers that she is adopted, and ends up being sent back to Shu Xiao Xiao (Hong Kong’s Mimi Kung), whom she believes is her real mother.

Also known as “Golden Voice”, Xiao Xiao is a famous club singer who ended up as a street concert singer as she had a burning passion for getai (stage) performances. She even formed a well-known street concert group named Da Hong Hua.

Of Wen Hui’s two suitors, Qing Yun is an orphan adopted by Xiao Xiao while Da Wei is the spoilt son of a well-to-do family.

Although Wen Hui and Qing Yun start off on the wrong footing and quarrel over petty issues, their love gradually grows. Yet, Wen Hui is wary of hurting the love-struck Da Wei, whom she is indebted to for helping her when she was embroiled in the scandal.

Embarking on a career in entertainment after she emerged champion of Singapore’s Star Search 2003, Chin has consistently been voted Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes at Singapore’s Star Awards since 2006. The actress first filmed in Malaysia when she starred alongside Malaysian singer-songwriter Rynn Lim in The Beginning (2006), the very first joint production between Singapore’s MediaCorp and Malaysia’s Media Prima Berhad.

The series also features local actors Chris Tong, Coby Chong, Moo Man Yee and Wang Jun.

The Glittering Days airs on ntv7 every Monday to Thursday at 10pm starting today.
