Poolside with Felicia and Elvin

Greetings and salutations, fellow star gazers! This is May Seah, your Showbiz Sista, live at the filming of No Limits, the upcoming sports-themed “idol drama” (in Elvin Ng’s words) starring Elvin, Felicia Chin, and Dai Yang Tian, coming to Channel 8 in July.

Showbiz Sista asks that you exercise discretion in the reading of this blog post. Because in this blog post, the usually straight-laced Elvin spills a very eyebrow-raising anecdote about something eyebrow-raising that he did in his younger years. Now that you’ve been warned, let’s begin.

It was a blazing day at the pool, where Felicia Chin’s character and her swimming team, consisting also of Tracy Lee Meiling, Julie Tan and Teo Ser Lee.

Felicia’s character is a competitive swimmer with a swimming club. “She’s not a very good swimmer, but she’s always aspired to be a national swimmer,” Felicia said. “The lovely thing is that swimming, to her, is not just a sport. It kind of connects her with her mum as well. Because her mum (played by Pan Lingling) used to be a swimmer with this club. So she protects this club with so much passion. I feel that it may not be something I’m very familiar with, but I kind of can connect it with my love for softball as well, and my love for acting and my family.”

“I guess it’s always fresh and interesting to watch something so young and vibrant on TV,” Felicia continued. “And I guess it never fails to appeal to all ages of viewers as well, because we have veteran actors like Wang Yuqing, who acts as my father. I guess I should add, he is the original Xiao Fei Yu (of Flying Fish fame). So I think it’s great that he’s acting as my father.”

Will this be the last show for Felicia, who has plans to leave MediaCorp to pursue further studies? “As a full-time artiste, this might be my last show. But I wouldn’t call it the last. Never call anything the last!”

Yes, but now for the all-important question: Will we get to see Felicia in a bikini? “No,” Felicia laughed. “Sorry to disappoint! We do a lot of swimming. But we don’t wear two-pieces.” And, Showbiz Sista is glad to report, it’s definitely curtains for bikinis on Orchard Road. “That’s passé already!”

Now we come at last to Elvin, who plays a sailing instructor. “I think one special thing about my character that’s different from my previous ones is that he’s a two-timer,” Elvin said. In the show, he’s torn between Felicia and Tracy.

And, in a further plot twist—we won’t get to see much of Elvin topless, either. What on earth is going on here?!

“Fortunately, I don’t have to be topless for a lot of the scenes,” Elvin said. “Initially they were saying they wanted me to be topless when sailing. But luckily at the sailing centre, they said, ‘You need a life vest.’ I said, ‘Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.’ Because I don’t want it to be like a flesh parade. I’ve had enough of it. I feel like if my selling point is just my body, then I’m quite worthless!”

Don’t worry, though—there’ll be at least one topless scene. “I have to go nude swimming in the sea with Fei, the character that Meiling (Tracy) does! We had a friendly bet. She said the loser would have to go nude swimming. We did a running race. So at last I gave in and I let her win! So I took off my shirt, handed the shirt to her, went in, then I said, ‘One, two, three.’ I went in underwater, took off my pants and swung them around in the air!”

“In fact,” Elvin confessed—and here it is! At last! We’ve come to the scintillating anecdote!–“I’ve gone nude swimming once before.” (Elvin! You? Well, I never!) “When I was quite young, I was quite naughty.” (Surely not!) “Actually, I was doing my A-levels, so not so young.” (Not so young, indeed!) “In my condo pool, I saw a European couple dancing the tango. They looked like they were nude. So suddenly I had an inspiration. My friends and I decided to follow them. We thought, ‘Wow, so romantic. So we decided to have some romance ourselves! We went in and we were just, wow. Free.”

Now, wasn’t that a strange and wonderful story from the mouth of Elvin himself?
